GOOD SUMMER READS (PT. 2)

August 1st is just around the corner…where has the time gone y’all?!  With the final lap of summer around the corner, Millie and Blake are back with part two of our “Good Reads” blog! How has your summer reading gone? We would love to hear any of your must-reads!

BLAKE

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy  (Eric Metaxas) Dietrich Bonhoeffer has become one of my newfound heroes of the faith. This book is definitely not what you would call a light read, but I was left awestruck and amazed by a man who stood for Christ until his death during WWII in Nazi Germany.  Bonhoeffer’s life struck a deep chord within me as the cost of following Christ was never too high for him to back away.

Unbroken (Laura Hillebrand) I began reading this book shortly after I finished Bonhoeffer so it was interesting to see the overlap of what was happening to two men on opposite sides of the world. This book chronicles the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who became a bombardier when he was drafted for the war. The imagery that Hillenbrand paints of Zamperini’s experience as he was lost at sea for 40 days and then as a POW in Japan was mind-boggling. I sobbed like a baby at the end of this book! Can’t wait for the movie to come out this Christmas!!

Sacred Search (Gary Thomas) I’d love for all my single friends to read this book!!! It casts great vision for dating and marriage. I love that he often says God designs relationships not for our happiness but for our holiness. This book was definitely a convicting read that helped to reshape my thinking about relationships!

MILLIE

The Firm (John Grisham) – I’m not one to read fiction very often, but when I do – John Grisham wins every time! The unfortunate thing with a Grisham book is that it only takes a day or two for me to read because once I start, I can’t stop, so I’ll stay up until the wee hours of the morning until my eyelids just can’t stay open! Great read.

A Praying Life: Connecting with God In A Distracting World (Paul E. Miller) — This isn’t the typical book on prayer that leaves you feeling like you won’t ever “get there” as it contains a practical approach to prayer that is not formulaic. His honesty about our struggles and barriers to a healthy prayer life left me feeling “normal” and not like a prayer-failure! This book instills hope that you can live a praying life.

Ragamuffin Gospel (Brennan Manning) If you haven’t read Brennan Manning, yet, go get one of his books right now! He is one of my favorite authors because he writes with deep honesty and compassion. This particular book will help you truly understand and embrace God’s amazing grace and discover how to enjoy the gospel for what it really is.

Happy reading friends!!
